The Basics
Basic dance steps are essential to mastering any dance style. Learn the basic steps first then combine them together in the correct series and you're dancing. Here are some basic line dance steps commonly found in various line dances:
Basic Step
Also known as a grapevine or weave.
Start with your right foot by stepping to the right side, then cross your left foot behind the right. Next, step to the right side again with your right foot and close your left foot beside it. Repeat this sequence, but starting with your left foot
Charleston
Start with your weight on your right foot. Extend your left foot forward, kicking it up slightly. Step back with your left foot, then touch the toe of your right foot behind you. Step forward with your right foot, then touch the ball of your left foot forward. Repeat, alternating between your right and left foot.
Rocking Chair
Begin with our weight on your right foot. Step back with your left foot, then rock forward onto your right foot, shifting your weight. Next, step forward with your left foot and rock backward onto your right foot. Repeat these steps back and forth, rocking between your feet.
Jazz Box
Start with your weight on your left foot. Cross your right foot over your left foot, then step back with your left foot. Step to the side with your right foot and close your left foot beside it. Repeat these steps in the opposite direction, starting with the weight on your right foot.
Pivot Turn
Begin with your weight on your right foot. Pivot on the balls of your feet, making a quarter-turn to the left. Step forward with your right foot and pivot another quarter-turn to the left. Repeat this sequence, making a full turn.
Toe Strut
Step forward with your right foot, placing only your toes on the ground. Shift your weight onto your right foot and lift your left foot off the floor. Step down with your left heel and transfer your weight to it. repeat this sequence, alternating between your right and left foot.
